Opentech 2008

I spent yesterday at Opentech. I had a great time there. Here are my thoughts on the talks that I saw. Rembrandt, Pr0n and Robot Monkeys: Lessons From the Present About Flesh and Technology – Kim PlowrightThis could have been interesting, but I think it was somewhat constrained by the short time allocated. It seemed… Continue reading Opentech 2008

Temptation

For probably the first time ever, I’m almost getting tempted by an Apple product. I mean, it’s still a lot of money to pay for a phone. And who would be happy with a music player that a) only has 16Gb of storage and b) won’t play sensible formats. But they do look nice.

Recording TV Revisited

It’s over two years since I wrote my piece on ways to record TV programmes. Quite a lot has changed in those two years, so I thought it was worth writing an update. The biggest change for me is that at home we’ve dragged ourselves into the 21st century and have stopped recording programmes on… Continue reading Recording TV Revisited

Server Issues

You’ll have noticed (I hope) that this site (along with a number of other sites I host on this server) went missing for a few days earlier this week. It just dropped off the internet at about Saturday lunchtime and didn’t reappear until Tuesday evening. I’m still trying to find out exactly what happened, but… Continue reading Server Issues

Sun RSS – Still Broken

Two weeks ago I wrote about how the new, “improved” RSS feeds from The Sun are, in fact, completely broken. In that two weeks nothing has changed and the feeds are still broken. Much as I enjoy seeing the Sun web team making a fool of themselves like this, I would actually like it even… Continue reading Sun RSS – Still Broken

Sun RSS Feeds Broken

It’s been a while since the “sensational soaraway” Sun started publishing RSS feeds of their stories. I’m subscribed to a couple of their feeds (it keeps my blood pressure up) but I noticed a couple of hours ago that the feeds I was subscribed to no longer exist. It seems that at some point in… Continue reading Sun RSS Feeds Broken

Password Basics

I’ve banged on before about the need for web sites to store passwords encrypted. This is a good example of why it’s necessary. Fasthosts, “the UK’s number 1 web host”, has fired off emergency emails telling customers to change all their passwords after police were called in to investigate a major data breach. Also note:… Continue reading Password Basics

Windows Users Trying Linux

This is a brief follow-up to my piece from a couple of weeks ago where I jokingly suggested that everyone should move away from Windows to Linux. I found this blog entry where a Windows user has been trying Ubuntu Linux for a couple of weeks. His findings make interesting reading. He’s had a bit… Continue reading Windows Users Trying Linux
