The UK press is predictably angry about the BBC’s request for an increase in the licence fee. When you’re reading stories about this you should bear in mind that papers like the Sun are slightly biased as they are owned one of the BBC’s broadcasting rivals. Many of them seem to be reporting this as… Continue reading BBC Licence Fee

Who’s On Brighton Pier
I was in Brighton over the weekend (for reasons I’ll write more about later) and whilst I was there I took the opportunity to visit the new Doctor Who exhibition. It was a bit over-priced for what it was (£6 each!) but it was nice to see a number of the props from the new… Continue reading Who’s On Brighton Pier
Vanishing Adverbs
When did people stop knowing the difference between adverbs and adjectives? It’s becoming common to hear people using adjectives instead of adverbs and it really grates. There’s an example on the BBC new site right now. The headline says “Charles urges society to go slow“. Isn’t it obvious that the last word should be “slowly”?
More Spooks
Ooh. New series of Spooks starts next week. There’s a two-parter on Monday and Tuesday. The last series wasn’t up to the standard of the first two (losing the three main characters didn’t really help) but it’s good mindless entertainment. I’ll certainly be watching. Oh and, purely coincidently, today I was given the first two… Continue reading More Spooks
Sarah! Jane! Smith!
Ex-Doctor Who companion Sarah Jane Smith will return in the new series of the sci-fi show, it was revealed as the Doctor’s new costume was unveiled. Popular 1970s character Sarah Jane, played by Elisabeth Sladen, will join new Doctor Who actor David Tennant. From the BBC site, so it must be true.
BBC Streams
I’ve made some pretty sweeping changes to the BBC streams page. Some of the Real Player links are now gone and there are now links to play everything in the BBC Radio Player application. You’ll notice that there are still some links to Real streams on my page. These mainly point to talk shows where… Continue reading BBC Streams
BBC on Fox
Roger Mosey, head of BBC Television News, says what he really thinks about Fox. Finally, we are never immune from accusations of bias. It goes without saying that there is nothing more sensitive than matters of life and death, and the BBC’s audience response has been massively supportive and understanding about the dilemmas we face… Continue reading BBC on Fox
BBC TV and Radio Listings Data
The BBC Backstage project has announced a new data feed which contains details of BBC TV and Radio programs for the next seven days. Looks interesting but, of course, what I really want is details of the listen again radio streams so I don’t have to screenscrape them.
Styling RSS
I’ve just noticed that the BBC have started styling their RSS feeds using XSLT. Take a look at this one for example. It all looks a lot nicer than the raw XML version. I may have to consider doing something similar for my RSS feeds.
Media Organisations
My contract with Guardian Unlimited finishes at the end of the month. So I’ve been poking around looking for a new contract. And it seems that I’ll be moving from one large media to another one. I start work for the BBC out in White City in two weeks.
