A survey published yesterday says that British teenagers are amongst the “worst” in the world. According to the survey.
- 40% of 15 year old girls have had sex
- 56% of 15 year old boys drink (alcohol I assume) every week
- 37% of 15 year old girls drink spirits
- 22% of 15 year olds have tried cannabis and 8% use it regularly
This figures are appalling. They’re far too low. What are the teenagers thinking of? Why are so many of them leading such boring lives?
The only worrying statistic is the one that says 71% of the girls who are having sex aren’t using condoms. This ties in with other recent reports that teenagers are generally unaware of the dangers of AIDS and HIV. But then they haven’t seen the major government information campaign that we were being subjected to at about the time they were born.
Im 16 and in 11th grade and theres only 2 or 3 people in my whole school that drink and smoke. i only know of 13 that do and when they have an party no one gose so dont make it out like all teenagers are bad cuz that kinda pisses me and all my class mates whos helping me write this off. If you are going to write %s like that get them right its 36% of boys who drink on a regular basie in the us. and only 14% whove used cannabis. so get ur shit straight if you gone put us down.
cory,Thanks for your comments. I think my entry makes it clear that the survey was talking about British teenagers. Also, let’s make it clear that I’m not putting anyone down. To my mind drinking, having sex and experimenting with drugs are a perfectly normal part of the teenage experience. If you haven’t donw any of these things then maybe you should get out there and try them.
Thats not a very wise thing to say at the bottom of that comment! irresponsible.im 19years old and i have tried everything there is too try and i regret it because its stupid. now i wouldnt recommend anyone to do things but they will because the MAJORITY of teenageers and even younger are stupid and will do these things and that is a common fact of life. people have no respect for each other or themselves so they do these things. i smoked for 5years and drank, now i dont do anything and i feel much better with myself and healthier! the kids that are doing these things, give them 2years and they’ll look back and see how stupid they were!
The most worrying thing in this thread seems to be the implied statistic that 100% of teenagers have no concept of writing grammatically correct standard English. Maybe they’re all drunk!
Well, make that 99% – spelling and grammar do seem to be atrocious, but some of us can actually write coherently. As a 15-year-old who doesn’t smoke or drink alcohol, please refrain from uselessly stereotyping us as nerds. Just because I don’t conform to your idea that these societally-imposed rituals are “perfectly normal,” doesn’t mean that I’m “boring”; at least, not according to my standards, or those of my friends. Many teenagers feel very pressured into trying various drugs and drinking too much alcohol because they’re viewed as “boring” if they don’t. Thanks for contributing to that view. Very helpful. Also, teenagers don’t generally drink moderately, and binge drinking is not only totally unsafe in and of itself, it also leaves people – girls particularly – vulnerable to attack. That’s what I call not boring! Woo! Party! And alcoholism is far, far more likely to follow later in life the earlier one starts drinking. So, great. Let’s get out there and start the drinking. Cool stuff.
