Janet Jackson’s Boob

I’m amazed by the amount of uproar in the US over Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake’s little escapade at the Superbowl. It’s a real indication of the difference in attitude between the US and the UK. Over there they’re having all sorts of inquiries into how such “obscene” material could appear on prime time TV. Over here we’d have all had a bit of a laugh and the photos would have been on the front pages of the tabloids for weeks. Incidently, if you haven’t seen it, the BBC has a photo of the offending item.

I saw another good example of America’s weird morals when watching the first episode of Nip/Tuck recently. The show includes some of the most graphic images of surgery that I’ve ever seen on TV, but despite there being a number of topless scenes, not a single nipple was in evidence. That would corrupt people.

  1. Aha! The consipiracy is working!(I’m waiting for the Blue Ribbon Panel to investigate illegal ties between Justin Timberlake, MTV and the Howard Dean Campaign. That nipple is pretty much the only thing that could disrupt the ongoing coverage of the DeanScream.)

  2. What I am amazed about is if any other average citizen of the U.S would have exposed themselves in public……they would have gone to jail!Imagine a man briefly flashing his testicles to children on their way out of school!Would a simple apology suffice? I mean it’s only a bit of nature…a piece of humanity!Doing such a thing is not the end of the world for heaven’s sakes! lolWould it be too much to ask for the same libery that apparently Janet Jackson enjoys? Would it be the end of the world to make her as accountable as you or I would be under the law?Or would Chester the Molester flashing children and their families in the park be A-OK now? What is the difference? It is all about “freedom of speech and expression”! “Nature”, “Humanity”, “Biology”, “Art”, and all the rest…….but apparently has nothing to do with common sense! lolI agree she should not be investigated by the feds…any more than you or I would! If it is freedom of speech….it should be available to all!We have laws in place in the U.S to address these issues! Pointing to violence or other “bad” things on tv will not justify this…..You can’t excuse “bad” or “criminal” behavior by pointing to even worse behavior……right!Anybody in need of a walking stick…..a light perhaps….lol

  3. I’m sorry, but I just can’t take this seriously. Are you honestly trying to compare a two second flash of a woman’s breast with a child molester?Over here in Europe children are acclimatised to the sight of naked breasts from an early age. There aren’t many days that go by without seeing a pair in a newpaper, on TV or in a film. And if we go on holiday to the beach then topless sunbathing is everywhere.I don’t see any damage being done by that. As far as I can see the damage is done by being so obsessive about “protecting” children from them. And sure, it might be aginst the law. But stupid laws never get changed if people don’t challenge them.

  4. I don’t think there is a standard of what should be on tv as far as what parts of our bodies to expose. Freedom of expression has nothing to do with it. There is no freedom without restraint. If we were truly free to express, why do we have bathrooms for the different sexes? why do we wear clothes? If you want to talk about freedom of expression and all that, let’s go all out! Otherwise, don’t excuse this stuff. Because there needs to be a line drawn, or we are saying “Do whatever you want!” Do we really want that?
