Petitions like this are a bit pointless, and in fact, maybe even give negative publicity. No one seriously expects this to happen, so maybe people should try to find a more realisitc goal.
I’m not sure why you think it’s pointless. People have been talking for some time about the need for a new public holiday in the UK. Shakespeare’s birthday is one common suggestion. But that’s a bit close to the Easter/Mayday/Whitsun holiday jamboree, so perhaps something in February might be better.And who better to commemorate than one of Britain’s greatest scientists?
