New Look Guardian Web Site

The Guardian has released a new version of the front page of its web site. Apparently it’s the first indication of things to come. My initial impression is that I like it, but I’ll almost certainly have more to say once I’ve lived with it for a few days.

Emily Bell goes into more detail about the reasons for the change, Mark Porter writes about design decisions and Nik Silver has more technical information.

  1. Sadly, I don’t think they’ve done a very good job of the new Guardian homepage. (I can’t remember the old one, it’s not a site that I visit, so I’m not longing for the old days!)My problem with it is that there’s far too much scrolling needed to see what’s on the page. You can’t see what’s going on at a glance. I find the two columns running down the page hard to take in quickly, since they don’t really align and make the eye dart around the page. There are also too many pictures and just wasted space. It looks pretty, but it’s not functional. Not for me, anyway!
