More War

Much as I hate to do this, I have to agree with something that Tony Blair said in yesterday’s House of Commons debate on the war with Iraq. He said that if we didn’t go to war now, then we (or the US or, I guess, the UN) would have absolutely no credibility the next time we threatened to to attack someone.

Now, whether or not you agree that attacking another sovereign nation because you think they might possibly attack you at some unspecified point in the future with weapons that no-one can find is a good idea or not, you have to agree with his point. Having got to this stage of willy-waving we (or, rather, the politicians) have been backed into a corner. I don’t think there’s any alternative to going ahead with the war.

Of course, that doesn’t mean that we have to like the idea. I really wish that they hadn’t put us in this situation. I really wish that Blair had asked Parliament for approval of his actions before he got involved in the events that lead us to this point instead of just asking for a rubber stamp at the last minute when it’s too late to change anything.
